BOTOX® & XEOMIN®

Neuromodulators are FDA-approved treatments that temporarily relax targeted facial muscles to soften the appearance of lines and wrinkles. By reducing the muscle activity that contributes to expression lines, these treatments help create a smoother, refreshed look.

  • WHAT IT IS

Neuromodulators such as Botox® and Xeomin® have been used safely in medicine for decades. When administered by a licensed medical provider, these treatments are designed to reduce the appearance of frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet while maintaining a natural look.

  • HOW IT WORKS

Neuromodulators work at the muscle level by temporarily blocking the release of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that tells muscles to contract. This relaxation helps soften existing lines and may slow the development of new ones caused by repeated facial movements.

  • WHAT TO EXPECT

Treatment typically involves a few small injections and can be completed in less than 30 minutes. Most patients begin to notice results within about 5–7 days, with full effects visible around 2 weeks. Effects generally last 3–4 months, though individual results vary.

FAQs

  • The number of treatments varies by individual and depends on factors such as the area(s) being treated (for example, frown lines, forehead, or crow’s feet), the strength of your facial muscles, and the depth of existing lines. At each neuromodulator appointment, you will meet with a licensed medical provider for a consultation to review your goals and adjust your treatment plan as needed.

  • Most patients describe the injections as a brief pinching or stinging sensation. The needle used is very small, and the treatment is performed quickly. Discomfort is usually mild, and ice packs may be offered during the appointment to support comfort.

  • Neuromodulator treatments are often called “lunchtime procedures” because most patients are able to return to work or resume normal daily activities shortly after their appointment. However, strenuous exercise and activities that increase blood flow to the face should be avoided for 24 hours. Temporary redness or swelling at the injection sites may occur and typically resolves within a few hours. Minor bruising is also possible and usually fades within a few days.

  • Results typically last about 3 months, though this can vary based on the treatment area, the strength of your facial muscles, and your individual response. Some patients may notice results wearing off sooner, while others maintain improvement a little longer.

  • Botox® and Xeomin® are both FDA-approved neuromodulators made from botulinum toxin type A and are used to treat expression lines such as frown lines and crow’s feet. The main difference is that Xeomin® is a “naked” formulation without accessory proteins, while Botox® contains additional proteins around the active molecule. Both work by temporarily relaxing targeted muscles to soften the appearance of lines. During your consultation, a licensed medical provider will review the differences and help determine which option is best suited to your treatment goals.

  • Like all medical treatments, neuromodulator injections carry some risks. The most commonly reported side effects include temporary redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites. Some patients may also experience mild headaches. These effects are usually short-lived. More serious but uncommon risks will be reviewed with you in detail during your consultation with a licensed medical provider.

    1. To help ensure the best experience and results, we recommend the following before your appointment:

      • Avoid makeup: Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin so your provider can clearly assess your treatment areas.

      • Timing: Schedule your appointment at least two weeks before any major event to allow results to develop and any temporary side effects to resolve.

      • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior, as it may increase the risk of bruising.

      • Skincare products: Discontinue the use of products such as Retin-A, tretinoin, or other retinoids for three days prior if they cause peeling or irritation, as intact skin is required for treatment.

      • Eligibility: Patients who are pregnant or nursing are not eligible for neuromodulator treatment.

Your licensed medical provider will review a full list of pre-treatment guidelines during your appointment.

    1. For best results and to minimize side effects, we recommend the following after your appointment:

      • Makeup: Avoid applying makeup until the following day to reduce the risk of irritation.

      • Stay upright: Remain upright for at least 4 hours after treatment.

      • Exercise: Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Light walking is fine.

      • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol for 24 hours, as it may increase the risk of bruising.

      • Avoid massaging: Do not rub or apply firm pressure to the treated areas (including heavy serums or moisturizers) for 4–6 hours.

      • Facials: Wait at least one week before receiving a facial or other skin treatments in the treated area.

Your licensed medical provider will review full aftercare instructions during your visit and answer any questions you may have.
